The Central Government considered it necessary to supersede the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010 for effective conservation and management of wetlands in the country.

The Government of India vide notification dated 26th September 2017 made (Wetlands Conservation and Management) Rules 2017. As per the Wetlands (Conservation & Management) Rules 2017, the Government have reconstituted the “Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority” under the chairmanship of the Hon’ble Minister (Forests) vide G.O. (Ms).No. 148 Environment and Forests (FR5) Department, dated 26.11.2018. The first meeting of reconstituted Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority was held on 26.08.2019 and the minutes were approved by the Authority vide Government letter No.11708/FR.5/2019-4, Dated; 23.09.2019.

At present two wetlands are being identified in each district and brief document and Wetland Health cards are being prepare.

Based on the provision of the Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2010, the Government have constituted the “Tamil Nadu State Wetland Authority” under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary to the Government vide G.O.(Ms).No. 55, Environment and Forest (FR.5) Department dated 23.05.2016. The erstwhile Authority met twice, on 11.01.2017 and 30.08.2017.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has enlisted initiating restoration of 100 wetlands as part of transformative ideas within 100 days and have identified three wetlands in Tamil Nadu under this programme viz., Point Calimere, Pulicat and Pallikaranai.

The four nodal officers were appointed for preparation of brief documents, constitution of wetland Mitras and formulation of management action plans for four wetlands vide G.O.(Rt).No.692, Environment and Forests (FR.5) Department, Dated: 15.10.2019 as follows.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has proposed a workshop for preparation of Integrated Management plans for managers of these wetlands to be held on 20th December 2019 in MOEFCC, New Delhi.
Subsequently, the Government of India, Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has identified Koonthankulam is 4th wetland under the programme of 100 wetlands.
A workshop on “Conservation & Management of Wetlands” for Wetlands Managers & nodal officers of wetlands of Southern states likes (Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Telangana) was held on 6th and 7th January 2020 at Cochin, Kerala and they decided extended to 1000 Wetlands in 2nd phase.
